However, when choosing a holiday, it’s not just a hotel photograph that matters. The date, mode of transport, budget, and what you truly want to experience on your trip are all important. I have prepared several tips for destinations that offer very different travel possibilities.

Italy delights city-break enthusiasts, food lovers and families alike. The Adriatic coast offers a classic summer holiday, Tuscany provides picturesque towns, and Rome boasts world-class landmarks. In the north, lakes and the Dolomites await with hiking trails. Decide in advance whether you primarily want to relax or go on excursions every day. Choose your region and transport accordingly.
Spain: islands and the mainland
Mallorca combines beaches with mountains and traditional towns. The Canary Islands are an interesting option for travel outside the main summer season, while mainland Spain offers cultural experiences in Barcelona, Valencia or Andalusia. However, the climate and swimming conditions vary significantly depending on the time of year and location. Before booking, look into the specific area rather than just the name of the country.
Crete, Rhodes, or Corfu entice visitors with their coastlines, traditional cuisine, and Mediterranean atmosphere. Greece is a good choice for relaxation, but it would be a shame to stay only within a hotel complex. In Crete, you can discover mountain villages and archaeological sites; in Rhodes, the historic centre; and in Corfu, the lush green landscape. When booking, check the distance from the beach and the actual location of the accommodation.
Austria and Switzerland: when the mountains call
I recommend the Alps to anyone looking to combine activity, nature, and relaxation. In Austria, you will find hiking trails, lakes, cable cars, and family trips. Switzerland impresses with its mountain railways and views, for example around Zermatt. Adapt your route choice to the fitness level of the whole group and keep an eye on the weather. Even during summer, mountain conditions change quickly. When planning, do not forget to account for the costs of transport and cable cars.
Ireland: A Journey Through Landscapes and Stories
If you are looking for something different from a classic seaside holiday, try Ireland. Dublin, the Wicklow area, Killarney National Park, and the west coast offer a combination of history, hiking, and vibrant local culture. How to choose a holiday that suits you?
Start with three questions: how much do you want to spend, how long can you travel for, and what should be the main experience? Then compare the total price, including transport, meals, and any excursions. Find out if the hotel is suitable for children, how far it is from the centre, and what the cancellation policy is. Read guest reviews with a focus on the date and specific experiences.

For popular dates, especially summer holidays, it is usually sensible to start choosing early. You will have a better chance to compare locations, room types, and departure airports. Last-minute offers sometimes bring an interesting price, but they may not meet requirements for a specific hotel or family facilities. When comparing offers, read what the price actually includes. Just as important as the price itself are the terms and conditions and information about the tour operator.
And what about travelling with children?
For families, I recommend paying particular attention to transfer times, safe entry into the water, and dining options. When holidaying in the mountains, consider the length of the routes and the possibility of shortening a trip if the weather changes. The programme does not need to be packed from morning till night. It is often more pleasant to have one significant experience per day and plenty of time to rest. This style of travel tends to be more enjoyable for everyone involved.
